Hyperborea is a land considered mythical by traditional historical research. Geographically it is located in the extreme north, either in the extreme north of the Asian continent, in Greenland or beyond. Proponents of the theory of the Hollow Earth consider that it is not in the world of the surface, but in the interior. The oldest known legend comes from the classical Greek authors; they speak of "the land beyond the north wind": a northern paradise inhabited by immortals.

Theosophical speculations place this continent millions of years ago, before the appearance of the human being on Earth and, according to the mythological scheme of theosophy, Hyperborea would be the home of the Second Root Race, an almost completely spiritual race, which would represent the First step of descent into materiality from pure spirit. This spiritual hyperborean of the Theosophists is situated in the last 25 million years. Of course, no material remains are preserved, and all the information has been obtained by mystical means and cannot be verified.

One of the most peculiar visions about Hyperborea was that of the writer Clark Ashton Smith (he was one of the "big three" of Weird Tales, with Robert E. Howard and HP Lovecraft) in his Hyperborean Cycle, cemented by a cosmic horror through the intervention of various deities and supernatural beings in a territory with a life of its own.
